Area Leaders Recognized at MWVCOG Annual Meeting and Dinner

The Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments (MWVCOG) recognized local elected officials, intergovernmental projects, and local leaders at the MWVCOG Annual Meeting on January 30, 2008 at Western Oregon University. 

Master of Ceremonies was Tribal Council Member Chris Mercier, newly elected chair of the MWVCOG Board of Directors.  The following awards were presented:      

  • The Gwen VanDenBosch Regional Leadership Award for outstanding leadership by an elected official was presented to Dallas Mayor Jim Fairchild for many years of service to the city and for advocating innumerable projects to better the city of Dallas;
  • The Wes Kvarsten Professional Service Award for distinguished service by a staff person or volunteer was presented to Greg Ellis, City Manager for the City of Independence,  who has served Independence in an exemplary fashion, and has participated in the leadership of three small business loan and community investment programs that benefit our region and beyond;
  • The Regional Cooperative Project Award for a project or initiative that has best exemplified regional, intergovernmental cooperation was given to the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest, which benefits dozens of non-profit and governmental entities in Marion and Yamhill counties.  In 2007, they distributed $105,756 to 62 organizations.
  • The Chairs’ Choice Award was presented to Yamhill County Commissioner Kathy George for her continuing service in Yamhill County.

A Certificate of Recognition was presented to Loreli Wright, City Recorder for the City of Carlton, for her suggestion that led to the new name of the MWVCOG newsletter.  Formerly known as The Facilitator the newsletter will now be called COG Works.

The following COG members, who have celebrated or will soon celebrate a major milestone, were recognized: 

  • Chehalem Park and Recreation District
  • City of Keizer
  • Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde

The City of Independence was also recognized for having the highest rate of representation at the event. `
